Numerous shops and local markets in Papua New Guinea sell various crafts and souvenirs. The best-sellers include carvings of ceremonial masks, small statuettes, made in Angoram and Sepik, hand-made baskets, arrows, bows, decorated axes, crocodile carvings from the Trobriands, pottery and items of local art. If you visit the capital on Saturday morning, go to the main shopping centre of the city, which is the best place to bargain. It includes a number of restaurants, bars, banks, and department stores. Major cities of the country have duty free shops and several excellent craft outlets. All the provincial capitals have their markets, where the tourists can buy not only handicrafts, including interesting collections of shell jewellery, wicker baskets and bamboo combs, but also exotic varieties of fruit and vegetables, as well as birds and animals.
